Jello Dashboard in Outlook 2010 beta

image

Greetings Jello Dashboard users!

It’s been a long time since my last post or code update. The truth is, I’ve been forced to take a long break from coding, due to family reasons (you know, small kids whining, tossing around toys and demand lots and lots of time).

After many questions from users about the compatibility of Jello Dashboard with the new version of Outlook currently in beta, I’ve decided to get a copy and test it. My first impressions were really positive, since everything seemed to work and the whole application was a lot faster than before.

Of course I forgot to add an Outlook view widget, or test my Outlook folder shortcuts with their default view set to Outlook mode!

The views are loading just fine at the beginning and the Outlook view control renders faster too. But when I tried to change view and go to my settings page…

Disaster!

Jello Dashboard came up with a blank screen. Removing an Outlook view widget from the homepage has the same effect.
Strangely enough this bug does not happen in the standalone version of Jello Dashboard, so I am a bit worried now.

Fortunately, the Microsoft Office 2010 version will be out probably this summer, so I think I got time to find out what’s going on.

If any of you, kind JD users, have tested Jello with Outlook 2010 and find that something else is wrong, please drop a comment here and let me know.

I hope this bug (or any others found) will be fixable and you will be able to hear from me soon!

Thank you for your support.

  1. I´m trying out the Outlook 2010 Beta as well and I haven’t had an issue yet. In fact it’s working better than my old 2007 version where I ended up using Jello standalone because of the many errors (works very well standalone). In 2010 I don’t get the same problems. I’ve only tested it a few days and have not played around with the widgets or folders. I´m very happy with the interface as it is;)

  2. I haven’t been able to use Jello with Outlook 2010 except via the standalone. When I try to integrate it with Outlook I get a script “Invalid Argument” error on line 9, char 42301. If I click yes I then get “Object doesn’t support this property or method” in line 9, char 63761.

I have disabled all IE add-ins and I still get the same message.

  3. Hi there,

You probably won’t want to read this, but since you have asked to drop a comment when something went wrong……

I can’t get things working properly on a windows 7 64 bit machine using Office 2010 beta. When I select install.hta from the install directory I get the message “Jello.Dashboard cannot run in this environment”. When I select “jello5.hta” then it seems to work nicely ( I can’t be sure because I have never used Jello before). At least I can work with it and it looks very promising. For that reason I want to help you test things or give additional information if you want to. Let me know if I can be of any help.
    Regards, Ben

  4. @Ben
The truth is I’ve never got any feedback regarding 64bit Windows. In Windows7 32 bit the install.hta works well.

If you cannot get insall.hta to work, try to manually set jello5.htm as a web page view into any local pst folder, so you can work directly from Outlook.

  5. I followed the manual installation on page 6 of your Jello dashboard documentation.

After following the instructions and pressing “OK” after point 1f, I got the following message. “Could not obtain offline settings for the address ‘C:programs….jello5.htm’. Certain types of addresses cannot be made available offline. Generally, the address must begin with http://.

I tried to run install.hta again and got the dashboard control center. I selected “Set in Outlook” and filled in the local .pst file I made. I got the message “You cannot setup a homepage for this folder. It is restricted by Outlook”. Then I tried the same with my Inbox (exchange-folder) and got a lot of script errors ( line 9; char 63671; Object doesn’t support this property or method; code 0; Url: …ext-all.js)

Selecting “Run standalone” works nicely. However it changed all my views in all the folders in a list form. I can turn my old views back on so that’s no problem.

Does this mean anything to you?

    1. This happens in exchange server folders. The best thing is to use a local pst folder to connect jello.htm to.

      1. As far as I know I tried to use a local .pst folder. (i.e. C:!SYNCDATAAPP-DATAOUTLOOKMy Jello Dashboard.pst). But obviously it acts like an exchange folder. I’m not even allowed to check the box “show home page by default”. I must admit that I’m working on a laptop that is “configured” to act as if I’m working on my business domain. So that might be the problem. I don’t know. I’ll try to find some expertise regarding this matter.

      2. Hi Nicolas,

I use a Exchange server in my office mails and tried integrating Jello manually… But, I also got the same error message “Could not obtain offline settings for the address….”

I am using Outlook 2010 and Jello v5.25.2 beta (Astral) on Windows 7.

When I click on OK in the dialog box, as stated by the Jello Help file, it throws up the error message, but the home page would have changed to Jello, even when I cancel the dialog. So basically, I don’t know if Jello is working fine or not!!! 😐

Any suggestions for this. And I really, don’t get why will we set a home page for the PSTs rather than on their exchange server home!

        1. One solution for this is to move your settings (journal entry) to a local journal folder.
One other is to define your journal folder to be used for off-line access (this is somewhere in the folder properties)

Unfortunately microsoft for no good reason does not allow homepages in every folder!

  6. When I select “Masterlist (F8)” from the standalone version then I get the following message:
    Line: 9
    Char: 501357
Error: ‘childnodes.1.childnodes’ is null or not an object
    Code: 0
    URL: file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/jello.Dashboard%205/extjs/ext-all.js
I have to kill the process using Task Manager.
If you need more information, please let me know. If you don’t like my comments (what I can understand) please let me know also.

  7. When I open Jello using jello5.htm then selecting “Masterlist (F8)” does not raise errors.

    1. I couldn’t reproduce that even in Outlook 2010. Is there any chance your F8 connected to a standard/plugin outlook function?

      1. Not that I know off. For something completely different….. I find it quite hard to explain it in English. I believe I can create movies of the things I encounter and share these with you using JING. I’ll give it a try and will come back to later. Thanks for patience so far

  8. I’m on Windows 7 64-bit and Office 2010 Beta. For me, Jello (5.006) is working better then ever! But I’m no power user, I only use the basic functions for collecting, clarify and review. In office 2007 I had lots of problems with the integrated version and had to use the standalone app. It was probably due to the fact that I had a Swedish version and the 2010 beta is in English which, although reported problems, is working MUCH BETTER.

BTW, I just LOVE the “move selected item to folder”-function. Is there a shortcut for this?

    1. Oh, really glad to hear that. The keyboard layout problem was something I could not deal with.

Unfortunately there is no shortcut yet for move, but why not?

  9. I would like to review Jello for Outlook 2010 Beta.

    1) Can you publish the URL to download it.
    2) Can you easily import the settings from Jello 5.06
    3) What does the new version offer beyond Jello 5.06?

Look forward to giving it a whirl…..

  10. Doh I have just realised I am meant be testing Jello 5.06 against Outlook 2010 … sorry about the confusion.

  11. I am on Win 7 x64 using Outlook 2010 beta. I have tried the standalone app which works fine. When I use the outlook version, my tasks show up, but no emails are referenced. I have verified that the page works in Firefox(default browser) and IE. I have even switched to IE and turned off all security settings. I am on exchange, and have checked an archive that has a pst as suggested in the forum and that doesn’t work either. I am running out of ideas. Please help…

    1. Is your Outlook 2010 in a click to run installer? This gave me problems too. It cannot practically run Jello Dashboard.

      1. I’m not quite sure what you are referring to when you say click to run installer. I have Office Pro Plus 2010 x32. I only see one installer on Microsoft’s site and it is an exe. I have a laptop that is running win 7 x32 with the same version of Office and it has the exact same problem.

        1. Click and run is the installer you get when you download the beta of Office 2010 home edition from microsoft’s site. The installer is small in size, and the packages are being downloaded when needed.
This version of Outlook has limited web access capabilities. Unfortunately I have to access to your kind of installer.

          1. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case because I have the pro version. As a last resort, I am willing to run it standalone, however, I was really hoping to make it work in outlook. If you have any more suggestions, they are welcome.
